Stranded Cruise Ship Heads Toward Strait of Hormuz

One of the cruise ships caught up in the ongoing disruption across the Persian Gulf is now on the move. Celestyal Discovery, operated by Celestyal Cruises, appears to be heading toward the Strait of Hormuz after spending weeks affected by regional tensions.

According to tracking data from CruiseMapper, the vessel has departed Dubai and is currently sailing at around 17 knots toward Khasab in Oman. The move suggests the ship may be attempting to pass through the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz and reposition after a series of canceled sailings in the Eastern Mediterranean. Due to the current situation, multiple sailings were canceled, leaving the ship temporarily idle in the region before this latest movement.

The vessel is one of at least six cruise ships that have been impacted and effectively stranded in the Gulf. Several ships have remained docked or holding position in ports such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, waiting for further clarity before resuming operations.

Two major cruise ships, MSC Euribia and Mein Schiff 5, are currently not visible on public tracking maps. This has led to speculation that their AIS transponders may have been turned off, a measure sometimes taken for security reasons in sensitive regions.

As Celestyal Discovery continues its course toward Oman, attention now turns to whether more ships will begin to reposition or remain in place until conditions stabilize. The situation remains fluid, with cruise lines closely monitoring developments before making further operational decisions.
