Norwegian Jewel has marked a major moment for Philadelphia, becoming the first cruise ship to dock and depart from the city in years as sailings officially resume from the PhilaPort Cruise Port.
The ship arrived early in the morning along the Delaware River, where passengers from a previous voyage disembarked before nearly 2,000 new guests boarded for a sailing to Bermuda. The departure signals the long-awaited return of regular cruise operations to the city, ending a gap that has lasted well over a decade.
For Norwegian Cruise Line, the moment represents a return to a familiar port after 17 years. Company representatives described the launch as an important milestone, highlighting renewed confidence in Philadelphia as a cruise hub and a gateway for regional travelers.
The restart of cruise activity follows years of efforts to bring ships back to the city. Local officials see the move as a boost for tourism and the wider economy, with thousands of passengers expected to pass through the terminal and contribute to local businesses, restaurants, and hotels.
The current PhilaPort facility is also just the beginning. Plans are already in place for a new, modern cruise terminal set to open in the coming months, aimed at accommodating more ships and expanding Philadelphia’s role in the cruise industry.
