The cruise community is mourning the sudden loss of Captain Michele Bartolomei, Master of the Diamond Princess, who passed away unexpectedly aboard the ship early Monday morning at the age of 52.
News of the captain's death came as the Diamond Princess was docked in Keelung, Taiwan, midway through a 19-day Southern Islands Explorer voyage that began in Yokohama, Japan. The announcement, made over the ship’s public address system, left passengers and crew in stunned silence.
Passengers onboard reported being awakened around 2 a.m. by a ship-wide call for the medical response team to report to the medical center on Deck 4. While many fell back asleep unaware of the gravity of the situation, the devastating news was confirmed hours later: Captain Bartolomei had passed away.
Captain Bartolomei was more than a figure of authority on the bridge. He was admired as a humble, professional, and deeply respected leader whose warmth and dedication left a lasting impression on all who sailed with him.
Cruisers described him as “the best captain I ever sailed with,” recalling his approachability and the pride he took in every voyage. His leadership during events such as the Captain’s Circle party became cherished memories for many returning guests aboard Diamond Princess, which they fondly call their favorite ship in the fleet.
“He was a true gentleman,” one passenger wrote in a tribute. “He made you feel safe, welcome, and part of a family.”
As the Diamond Princess arrived in Taipei on May 19, an announcement confirmed the tragic loss to all on board. Many passengers stood in disbelief, holding back tears as the weight of the moment settled in.
Staff Captain Salvatore Macera has since assumed command of the vessel, guiding the crew and guests through this difficult time. The crew, referred to in many tributes as Captain Bartolomei’s “other family,” is said to be deeply affected.
While the cruise continues on its scheduled itinerary, hearts remain heavy. Guests and crew have joined together in remembrance, sharing stories of the captain who made them feel at home, even in the middle of the ocean.
