The cruise ship Manara, operated by Aroya Cruises, will house thousands of athletes during the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy.
The former World Dream cruise ship, now operated by Saudi Arabia-based Aroya Cruises, will host approximately 3,500 athletes aboard during the Games, which will take place between August and September 2026. Athletes from 26 Mediterranean nations are expected to participate.
According to organizers, all athletes accommodated on Manara will stay in double cabins, while the ship will also function as the central gathering point for meals, meetings, entertainment, and social events. A second vessel, expected to accommodate around 1,200 additional guests, is also being secured and will be announced shortly.
The luxury cruise ship was selected following a lengthy procurement process that saw multiple tenders fail before organizers reached an agreement with Aroya Cruises. The contract for Manara was reportedly valued at €17 million, significantly below earlier proposals involving other cruise operators.
The ship, known for its upscale amenities and spacious accommodations, will be moored at the Italian Navy's Chiapparo naval base throughout the Games. The naval facility is being upgraded to support athletes, volunteers, and event staff.
Rather than constructing a traditional athletes' village, organizers opted for the cruise ship solution, citing time constraints, budget considerations, and the ability to provide accommodation, dining, and hospitality services in one location.
