Suspected Drug Smuggler Arrested at Singapore Cruise Centre

Singapore authorities arrested a 27-year-old Indonesian man at the Singapore Cruise Centre after discovering more than one kilogram of suspected controlled substances in his luggage. Officials have not released the name of the cruise ship involved, or said whether the man was a passenger or a crew member.

The arrest took place on January 29, after officers from the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) noticed the man behaving nervously during routine clearance procedures. His suspicious demeanor prompted officers to conduct a detailed inspection of his luggage.

During the search, authorities discovered a yellow package hidden inside the man’s pink suitcase. When officers opened the package, they found approximately 1.02 kilograms of brown powder believed to be Kratom, a substance classified as a controlled drug in Singapore.

According to the ICA, the powder is suspected to contain mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine, both classified as Class A controlled substances under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act. These compounds affect the brain and can produce stimulant-like effects, including mood changes, nausea, seizures, and hallucinations.

The suspect was arrested at the cruise terminal, and the case has been handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for further investigation.

Under Singapore law, importing Class A controlled drugs carries severe penalties, including a mandatory prison sentence of at least five years, along with corporal punishment.

Singapore authorities continue to enforce strict drug control measures at all entry points, including cruise terminals, as part of ongoing efforts to prevent drug trafficking into the country.
