New Tattoo Rules Take Effect Soon for Princess Cruises Crew

Princess Cruises has issued a fleetwide reminder to crew members confirming that its updated tattoo policy will officially take effect on April 2, 2026, reinforcing rules that have already sparked discussion across the fleet.

In a recent internal communication sent to all shipboard teammates, the company reminded crew that multiple visible tattoos or full sleeve tattoos must be covered while on duty or in guest areas, using approved uniform options or tattoo sleeve coverings.

The reminder, shared two weeks in advance, gives crew time to prepare before enforcement begins.

The latest reminder builds on a series of changes introduced over the past year.

Back in 2025, Princess Cruises rolled out a stricter appearance standard requiring all visible tattoos to be covered while on duty, marking a major shift from its previous, more relaxed approach where non-offensive tattoos were generally allowed.

Previously, the company permitted tattoos as long as they were not offensive or inappropriate, with only face and neck tattoos strictly prohibited.

However, the updated policy aligned Princess more closely with broader corporate brand standards and aimed to maintain a “polished and cohesive look” across the fleet.

Adjustments After Crew Feedback

Following backlash from crew members—many of whom raised concerns about working in hot climates while covering tattoos—Princess introduced some flexibility.

According to Crew Center reporting, the company later allowed limited exceptions, including:

  • Small, discreet tattoos (up to 5 cm x 5 cm)
  • Case-by-case review for cultural or religious tattoos
  • Expanded options for sleeve coverings

Still, larger or multiple tattoos must remain covered, especially in guest-facing roles.

Crew Concerns and Industry Context

The stricter rules have not gone unnoticed among crew.

Many have argued that:

  • Tattoo coverings can be uncomfortable in warm-weather itineraries
  • Additional uniform items may come at personal cost
  • The policy limits personal expression

Some crew even launched petitions opposing the changes, highlighting that tattoos are now widely accepted among guests as well.

The move also contrasts with other cruise lines that have recently relaxed tattoo policies, reflecting different approaches across the industry.

The latest communication confirms that Princess Cruises is moving forward with full implementation.

From April 2, 2026:

  • Visible tattoos must be covered while on duty
  • Sleeve tattoos require approved coverings
  • Compliance will be part of onboard appearance standards

The company says approved tattoo coverage items will be available through onboard Crew Shops or uniform stores.
