Is Norwegian Cruise Line Exploring Longer Crew and Officers Contracts?

A survey conducted onboard three Norwegian Cruise Line ships is raising questions about whether the company could be considering longer contracts for all officers and crew in the future. The survey states that the company is “exploring future options related to contract length and wants feedback from crew before making any decisions.

The cruise line launched an anonymous “Service Period (Contract) Extension Survey” for crew onboard the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Dawn, and Norwegian Joy.

The survey asks crew members to share their thoughts about contract duration and the possibility of extending their current or future contracts by up to eight weeks. The survey was voluntary and anonymous, with crew members asked to complete it by May 14.

In the introduction to the survey, NCL said:

“Norwegian Cruise Lines has received feedback that some crew members are interested to stay longer on board and have the opportunity for greater earnings – we hear you! We are exploring the opportunity to offer a contract extension of up to 8 weeks, providing the chance to choose what works best for you and your family.”

NCL also noted that any potential extension would keep the same compensation structure and growth opportunities as the crew member’s current contract.

The survey included several questions aimed at understanding how crew members feel about longer periods onboard. Crew members were asked whether their current contracts had already been extended or shortened, whether the change was requested by them or by NCL, and whether they would be willing to extend their current or next contract by up to eight weeks.

Another question asked crew members to explain why they might not be motivated to extend their contract, while also asking which ship they are scheduled to join next.

At this stage, there is no official confirmation from Norwegian Cruise Line that contract extensions will be introduced across the fleet. However, the survey suggests the company is actively exploring and trying to measure how crew members feel about potentially longer contracts.

The survey has already generated discussion among crew members, as some believe the proposed extensions could result in spending close to eight months onboard before going home on vacation. One crew member pointed out that the crew always had option to extend the contract individually by filling request form at the crew purser office.

For many cruise ship employees, contract length remains a sensitive issue. Some crew members may support longer contracts because of increased earning opportunities and fewer travel disruptions, while others worry about fatigue, stress, burnout, mental health, and extended time away from family.

The topic is likely to generate mixed reactions among crew, especially at a time when work-life balance, mental health, and crew welfare continue to be widely discussed
