Malta has taken a major step toward sustainable maritime operations by signing the Mediterranean's first Power Purchase Agreement with Carnival UK & P&O Cruises on behalf of Carnival Corporation brands. The agreement enables cruise ships to connect to Malta’s Shore-to-Ship power system, reducing emissions while docked.
At the signing event, Prime Minister Robert Abela emphasized Malta’s commitment to green innovation, highlighting the €88 million annual contribution of cruise tourism to the country’s economy. The initiative positions Malta as a leader in eco-friendly port operations, five years ahead of the EU’s 2030 shore power deadline.
The newly electrified cruise berths will power ships with clean energy, integrating solar and wind sources, further reinforcing Malta’s Vision 2050 for sustainability. Transport Minister Chris Bonett and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli echoed the significance of this milestone, while Carnival UK President Paul Ludlow praised the collaboration as a model for responsible cruising.
With major brands like P&O Cruises, Cunard, Costa, and Princess Cruises onboard, Malta is set to redefine cruise tourism by prioritizing clean energy, economic growth, and environmental responsibility.
