A fire broke out in the engine room of the Luxury cruise ship, P&O Aurora. The vessel was drifting for an hour in mid-Atlantic without propulsion and electricity. Aurora made the last stop to King’s Wharf, Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda, before heading to Ponta Delgada, the Azores when a fire started in the engine room at around 13:00 September 20. 

All passengers were told to go back to their cabins while the crew handled the situation. After the fire was extinguished, the backup generators were started and the Captain addressed all aboard on the PA system thanking the crew for their efficient work and the passengers for the way they handled the emergency. 

The captain and the crew handled the situation professionally. It happened just before lunch yesterday and we drifted. It was frightening but no injuries and all passengers and crew are safe and well. We are now on our way to the Azores, reports one passenger sailing onboard

Carrying some 1900 passengers and a crew of 850, P&O Aurora is scheduled to arrive in its homeport Southampton, England on September 26.
