Disney Rumored To Purchase Second Island in the Bahamas

Submitted by kgnadmin on

Rumors have surfaced on several websites and forums about Disney Cruise Line plans to purchase Egg Island in the Bahamas. Located just 58 miles from Disney’s island Castaway Cay, Egg Island sits off the coast of North Eleuthera, surrounded by other family islands that are close by. The rumors started two months ago when drilling equipment arrived in Spanish Wells on May 12th, 2016 and sat on the PUBLIC dock until June, 23rd 2016. One week ago the equipment was installed near Egg Island. Michael Pinder on DVC info forum said “My family has a cottage on Egg Island, it has been there for about 30 years now. I do know that Disney had surveyors on the island about 2 months ago. I spoke with them personally, and was told by them that they were there for Disney. Disney now has a crew drilling core samples in the sea floor and reef around the island. The locals from nearby islands are not happy about this. I think that Disney will find a lot of resistance from those disgruntled locals and will most likely have to abandon this project.”

Since Disney Cruise Line is operating just four cruise ships and two new will enter service in the following years, it is unlikely they need second island in the Bahamas. However if the rumor is true there is possibility they will divert the ships itineraries to their themed resorts islands.

Holly Peel –local resident who is spreading the environmental awareness on Egg Island says “Disney Cruise Line is taking core samples of the sea bed for a proposed cruise port as there is in Castaway Cay, and that’s devastating.” Mrs. Peel together with the local community  in hopes to gain awareness opened petition online.

Save Egg Island (Bahamas)! Stop Disney Cruise Line! Preserve Egg Island!

In the petition she says “Disney is in the process of purchasing Egg Island, Bahamas to put in a cruise ship port. We must stop this and further development threats!

Egg Island is an Island that sits off the coast of North Eleuthera in the Bahamas, surrounded by other family islands that are a stones throw away. Egg Island's natural beauty has been enjoyed by generations and is of great ecological significance to not only the communities of North Eleuthera and Spanish Wells, but to the Bahamas has a whole. Egg Island boasts several ecosystems including mangroves, coral reefs, salt ponds, rocky shoreline and beach. Egg island is known for having a sustainable grouper spawning aggregation, of which there are few left in the Bahamas. The endangered sea turtles are well known to nest on egg island beach, endangered shore birds nest there and the juvenile conch are maturing in safety.”
