One person died and four were injured when a massive freak wave crashed into the expedition cruise ship Viking Polaris, during a storm as it sailed off the southernmost tip of South America. The Viking Polaris was sailing Tuesday towards Ushuaia, Argentina, the home port for expedition ships to Antarctica, when there was “a rogue wave incident,” Viking said in a statement.
A U.S. Coast Guard investigation is underway into the collision between the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl and the fishing vessel Gabby G.
The Gabby G, was returning to port when it struck the Norwegian pearl, which was on its way to Bermuda, the Coast Guard said. The crash happened at 2:25 a.m. in rainy conditions about 35 miles southeast of Nantucket.

According to passengers onboard, Tropic Freedom came alongside the harbor’s edge at speed, hit the concrete edge of the dock, and then lodged itself into Mariner of the Seas, which caused a lot of noise and shook the vessel.

A 44-year-old electrician, member of the crew of the cruise ship MSC Lirica, was injured on Wednesday while trying to change a valve of the cooling mechanism. At the time of the accident, MSC Lirica was at the port of Corfu, Greece where the ship is currently in warm layup. The crew member, whose name was not released, was first checked by the ship’s doctor and later transported by EKAB ambulance service to the Corfu General Hospital, for further medical treatment.
