Coast Guard Airlifts Passenger from MSC World America

A passenger aboard the MSC World America was medically evacuated today by the U.S. Coast Guard after suffering a serious medical emergency while the ship was sailing in the Caribbean, according to information shared with Crew Center by a crew member onboard.

The incident occurred while the vessel was en route from Cozumel to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

According to the crew member, the medical situation was urgent and could not wait. The ship’s command contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, which quickly responded to the request for assistance.

A Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched to the ship, where rescue personnel performed a mid-sea medical evacuation, airlifting the passenger from the vessel for urgent medical care ashore.

Photo of the evacuation was shared on social media in an MSC World America passenger Facebook group.

One passenger onboard described the situation in a post shared online:

“This was today on MSC World of America during our sea day. The ship had a sick passenger. The ship went to Key West where a helicopter met the ship and picked up the passenger. We are now on our way to Ocean Cay.”

Crew Center extends best wishes for a speedy recovery to the passenger involved and thanks the U.S. Coast Guard and all responding personnel for their swift and professional response in ensuring the passenger received urgent medical care.
