After a 9 year, hard fought battle with breast cancer the godmother of Celebrity Eclipse Emma Pontin passed away.  Emma was inspirational yachtswoman setting sail on her firs ocean-racing in 2002 on her first Challenge Transatlantic race with only one week sailing experience. 

Her devotion for sailing grew to the point that, four years later, she was selected as yacht skipper for the ARC Transatlantic race. Pontin was diagnosed with breast cancer prior to this race and had to return to the Britain for a mastectomy and for precautionary measures undergo double mastectomy. The Breast Cancer didn’t stop Emma to pursue her passion for sailing, inspiring thousands with her 15 transatlantic races sailing more than 100,000 nautical miles.

As part of their "100 Lives" project BBC Radio followed Emma’s story, highlighting her courageous fight with the breast cancer. During this period, she described, in diary, her battle against cancer, which later was published in a book with the title, Beating the Blowfish.

Celebrity Cruises released statement saying:

“It is with a heavy heart that we share news of beloved Celebrity Eclipse godmother Emma Pontin's passing. An inspiring adventurer and an accomplished yachtswoman of many talents, Emma will always hold a special place at Celebrity Cruises. It is because of the bravery and leadership of women like Emma – and women and families everywhere – that breast cancer research should continue to receive attention and support in the journey to find a cure in our lifetime. Our condolences to Emma's family and friends. She will be missed dearly, and her memory will live on.”

Her heart will remain on the Celebrity Eclipse, and her spirit will travel with all who sail on it.
