Viking Star crew member goes overboard in Mediterranean

A deeply distressing situation has unfolded aboard Viking Star after a crew member went overboard while the ship was sailing between Crete and Sicily on Monday morning. The alert was raised at 11:31 a.m. local time on October 27, when the individual went overboard in the southern Aegean Sea. The atmosphere onboard quickly shifted from a calm day at sea to an emergency response that left both crew and guests shaken.

According to Viking, the ship’s bridge team activated man-overboard protocols immediately. Crew members rushed to the railings, deploying life rings and smoke flares to mark the location as alarms echoed throughout the vessel. Witnesses described the tension as Viking Star turned back and repeatedly circled the area, hoping for any sign of their colleague in the waves.

The Italian Coast Guard assumed control of the search as soon as communication was established, expanding operations into the broader Mediterranean corridor. Satellite data confirms that Viking Star remained on scene for several hours before the Coast Guard released the vessel to resume its voyage.

There are 471 crew currently aboard, each feeling the emotional weight of this tragic event. Viking released a statement expressing its sadness and promising ongoing support to the crew member’s family.

Viking’s ocean fleet is built around smaller ships with tight-knit community, where everyone knows one another by name, role, and story. Crew members share long contracts, long distances from home, and strong bonds that extend far beyond the workplace. Losing one of their own is not simply a professional loss. It feels like losing a family member.

The thoughts and heartfelt condolences of the entire crew community go to the loved ones of the missing crew member and to the colleagues onboard Viking Star facing this heartbreaking ordeal together.
