Teen Prank Triggers Full Man Overboard Search on Oasis of the Seas

A routine cruise day turned into a tense emergency aboard Oasis of the Seas after a reported man overboard incident forced the ship to turn around and launch a full-scale search—only for the captain to later reveal it was all a prank.

The incident unfolded Friday as the Royal Caribbean vessel sailed from Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic back toward Fort Lauderdale, nearing the end of a six-night Western Caribbean voyage that began on March 15.

According to passengers, the ship suddenly reversed course off the coast of Cuba near Cayo Guajaba after a report that someone had gone overboard. Crew members immediately initiated emergency procedures, deploying life rings into the water and contacting the U.S. Coast Guard.

Onboard, the mood quickly shifted from relaxed to anxious.

Several passengers took to social media in real time, asking for prayers and sharing updates as the situation developed. One viral post described hearing the emergency call “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar, starboard”—a standard maritime code for man overboard—followed by the captain announcing that a search operation was underway.

For nearly 90 minutes, the ship remained engaged in the search, with many guests fearing the worst.

Then came the update no one expected.

The captain returned to the public address system to clarify that no one had actually gone overboard. The entire incident, according to reports from guests, was triggered by a group of teenagers playing a prank. Friends of a young girl had allegedly told her grandmother that she had fallen overboard, sparking panic that escalated into a full emergency response.

Once the situation was verified, the search was called off, authorities were notified, and the ship resumed its original course.

Despite the disruption, Oasis of the Seas remains on schedule to arrive in Fort Lauderdale as planned.

The reaction from passengers was swift—and largely furious.

Many described the incident as “terrifying” and criticized the reckless behavior that led to a massive deployment of crew resources and unnecessary alarm. Online discussions quickly turned to calls for strict consequences, including lifetime bans for those involved.
