The world’s largest cruise ship just got a Godmother worthy of its name, and what better person to christen the Star of the Seas than an actual astronaut?
Royal Caribbean has named astronaut, author, and science communicator Kellie Gerardi as the new Godmother of Star of the Seas, replacing legendary singer Diana Ross, who stepped down from the role last week due to unforeseen circumstances.
Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley made the announcement during a press conference aboard the ship, saying the choice was inspired by the very spirit of the new vessel.
“Star of the Seas is like another level of adventure and excitement and just really super special,” Bayley said. “It’s sailing out of Port Canaveral. So, why don’t we find someone who’s maybe like an astronaut? Someone who has been to space and could really embody what Royal Caribbean’s doing in terms of adventure and excitement.”
Bayley also emphasized the importance of keeping a woman in the Godmother role, a tradition the company wanted to uphold.
Gerardi is no stranger to breaking barriers. A payload specialist for Virgin Galactic and Director of Human Spaceflight Operations at the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences, she became the 90th woman to fly to space in 2023. She’s also the author of two children’s books — Luna Muna and Luna Muna Space Café — and boasts 1.4 million Instagram followers. Her accolades include being named a 2025 Woman of the Year by USA Today, receiving a People’s Voice Webby Award, and earning a spot on the TIME100 Creators list.
“She’s wonderful,” Bayley added. “She’s got a great sense of humor, very articulate, she’s a mom… we’re all very excited that she accepted the role.”
Gerardi will officially christen Star of the Seas on the ship’s August 20th sailing from Port Canaveral, Florida. The second Icon-class vessel — following Icon of the Seas, christened by soccer legend Lionel Messi — will offer 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, including stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
