Royal Caribbean Group Pledges $1 Million in Relief for Jamaica

As the first reports from Jamaica show the massive devastation brought by Hurricane Melissa, Royal Caribbean Group has stepped in to support recovery efforts in Jamaica. The group through its cruise line brands including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, has pledged over US$1 million in aid, in partnership with non-profit Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), whose Caribbean team is based in Kingston, Jamaica.

Royal Caribbean Group said: “In times of need, we remain steadfast in supporting the local communities where our ships and employees call home.” The relief effort currently focuses on delivering essential supplies such as bottled water, canned goods and non-perishables, to affected communities, and it’s expected to span several months as recovery unfolds.

Beyond the material donations, the company is also offering support to its Jamaican shoreside employees and crew — around 1,200 in number — who are deeply worried about their family and friends back home. Michael Bayley, President & CEO of Royal Caribbean, said the company has already been in contact with the Jamaican government and its own personnel to ensure their welfare is addressed.

Regularly visiting ports on the island the fleet offers potential relief-delivery channels and personal reconnection opportunities for Jamaican crew. Meanwhile, the Port Authority of Jamaica is currently assessing the state of each cruise-port to determine when safe operations can resume.
