Today the popular cruise website Cruise Capital reported that Princess Cruises has sold two of its cruise ships as part of Carnival Corporation restructuring plan to sell 18 ships from its fleet this year amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the source, Princess Cruises in an email sent to travel agents said the company has sold the sister ships Sun Princess and Sea Princess and they will be soon leaving the fleet.
“We are writing to share the news that Sea Princess and Sun Princess have been sold and will be leaving our fleet. While it is never easy to say goodbye to any ship in our fleet, the sale of these ships will allow us to deploy newer ships enhancing our offering for Australia cruisers.
Since you have guests currently booked on this future sailing, we regret that we must cancel the bookings of your clients. Guests will receive separate communications advising of this cancelation." Princess email says.
While the future of Sea Princess in not known, Cruise Capital revealed that Sun Princess is believed to be sold to the Japanese non-profit organization Peace Boat, and the ship will be renamed to Pacific World.
With a gross tonnage of 77,499 GT, Sun Princess was one of the largest ships when it joined the fleet in 1995. During the 2021 season, Sun Princess was scheduled to sail voyages in Australia before repositioning in spring for the Alaska season.
In 1998 Sea Princess joined Princess Cruises fleet as the second Sun Class cruise ship. The ship was completely refurbished in 2017, emerging with a new look entertainment, dining options, and staterooms. In 2021, Sea Princess was scheduled to offer voyages to Australia including a 108-night World cruise departing from Brisbane.
