P&O Cruises newest cruise ship Arvia, suffered a minor fire while undergoing the final stage of construction at the German shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg, on Thursday afternoon.
The fire broke out during welding work in a pool equipment room. The ship was recently undocked and is located on the Meyer shipyard's outfitting quay. During the firefighting operation on board the Arvia, all workers have to evacuate the 344-meter-long ship.
Shipyard’s fire brigade was the first ones on the site and started firefighting measures after the fire was reported at 1:30 pm. Local fire brigades arrived shortly after and the fire was extinguished at around 3:30 pm. German media reports that there are no injuries and that the construction work will continue on the ship. This incident will not delay the ship’s delivery date.
In July, two fires were reported at the construction site aboard Arivia. Back then fires broke out at a storage room where workers found a burning garbage bag, and inside a nearly completed cabin. During the incident, one security guard was hospitalized and treated for smoke inhalation. The initial damages to the ship were estimated at around 60.000 Euros.
