The construction of Mein Schiff Relax, TUI Cruises newest cruise ship, is nearing completion at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. The ship recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing its third sea trial, during which it operated on liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time. Delivery of the ship is scheduled for early 2025, with a cruise debut for March 2, 2025, and a christening ceremony planned for April 9, 2025, in Malaga.
The latest sea trial, conducted focused on testing the ship's LNG propulsion system. According to TUI Cruises, the fuel system underwent rigorous evaluations, including the bunkering of LNG and cooling of the fuel to ensure optimal operation. The subsequent test drive confirmed the LNG system’s functionality during regular operations, marking an important step in integrating sustainable energy solutions aboard the ship.
This milestone follows the first sea trial in October, which primarily assessed the ship’s performance and maneuverability. Both trials demonstrate the ship’s readiness to embrace dual-fuel engines capable of operating on marine diesel and low-emission, climate-friendly bio- and e-LNG. “With the Mein Schiff Relax, not only is a new class of ship being put into service, we are also breaking new ground in terms of sustainability,” stated Georgios Vagiannis, Director of Newbuild at TUI Cruises.
