Royal Caribbean is increasingly turning to advanced robotics to enhance both guest entertainment and onboard operations, without replacing crew members.
According to Royal Caribbean International President & CEO Michael Bayley, the company continues to focus on using technology to elevate the cruise experience while improving efficiency. A key part of that strategy is the use of collaborative robots, or “cobots,” designed to work alongside crew rather than behind the scenes.
On newer ships, including Icon of the Seas, robots play a visible role in entertainment. In venues like AquaTheater and Two70, robotic systems equipped with large LED screens and dynamic movement are integrated directly into performances, becoming essential elements of the shows rather than simple visual effects.
Beyond entertainment, robots are also supporting day-to-day operations. On Star of the Seas, robotic cleaners assist housekeeping teams by navigating the ship using mapped areas and QR-coded instructions. These machines help improve efficiency while allowing crew members to focus more on guest interaction.
Royal Caribbean is also deploying underwater hull-cleaning robots to maintain ship performance. These devices help reduce fuel consumption by keeping the hull clean, contributing to both operational efficiency and sustainability.
The company emphasizes that the goal is not to reduce crew numbers, but to enhance productivity and elevate the overall onboard experience through smart use of technology
