Fire at Port of Barcelona Disrupts Cruise Operations

A fire at the Port of Barcelona on Sunday caused disruption to cruise operations, sending a large plume of black smoke across the port.

The blaze reportedly began when a truck caught fire at a cargo terminal on the Ponent dock, quickly spreading to multiple trailers and vehicles. In total, around 20 vehicles were affected before firefighters brought the situation under control. Emergency teams were alerted shortly after 1:15 p.m., with the fire contained by late afternoon and fully extinguished in the evening.

Witnesses described hearing explosions as the flames intensified, while thick smoke forced authorities to shut down access to parts of the port. Police restricted entry to key areas leading to the cruise terminals, leaving many passengers stranded outside and unsure if they would make their departures.

At the time of the incident, three cruise ships, MSC Orchestra, Costa Toscana, and MSC Armonia were docked in Barcelona. Some guests reported delays boarding, while others waited anxiously for updates as access roads remained blocked.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and early indications suggest the containers involved did not contain dangerous goods. Port operations gradually resumed later in the day, though firefighters remained on site monitoring for hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
