Fire Onboard Emerald Princess

Fire broke out aboard the cruise ship Emerald Princess, on September 17 while the ship was sailing from Southampton to Las Palmas. The news was headlined by the popular maritime blog Cruise Law News. A passenger sailing on the current voyage send a message to Jim Walker, saying that the fire started in the engine room. Smoke was spotted on the lower aft decks, and the captain give order for all crew to report to their emergency stations. According to the passenger there was “suspected fuel leak and fire in the engine room”. Immediately firefighting teams were send to the scene and distinguished the fire. Later it was discovered that fire source was generator air supply belt on deck 16 near the ships funnels close to the Movies under the Stars outdoor theater. The bridge ordered this open deck area to be shut down. There is no official report of injured crew members and Princess Cruises didn’t release any statement regarding this accident.

Update: According to ABC.es the ship will be inspected by the coast guard upon the arrival in Las Palmas, and a team of technicians will be send in Gran Canaria to fix the ventilation belt.

It is exactly two years when another fire broke out aboard Emerald Princess just around midnight on September 16th, 2014. The ship was sailing similar route, south of Southampton when a fire started in the engine room. The entire crew has been stationed to their emergency position following what was first reported as a technical incident.

Emerald Princess is currently on a 11-Day Canary Cruise. The ship departed Southampton, England on September 17 to Gran Canaria, Canary Islands; Tenerife, Canary Islands; Arrecife, Canary Islands; Funchal, Madeira; Vigo, Spain and is scheduled to arrive in Southampton, on 28 September.
