Extinction Rebellion Targets P&O Ventura in Latest Anti-Cruise Demonstration

Environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion staged a protest against P&O Cruises ship Ventura as the ship attempted to dock in Rotterdam, temporarily delaying its arrival by more than 30 minutes.

Around 15 demonstrators in small boats and canoes attempted to block the 116,000-ton vessel’s approach to the quay. Local police quickly intervened, clearing the Maas River channel and arresting two protesters. Despite the disruption, the ship docked safely and passenger operations proceeded without further incident.

Extinction Rebellion later claimed responsibility, calling cruise ships “floating environmental disasters” and vowing to continue direct action unless the Dutch government bans the industry outright. Activists also staged demonstrations onshore, displaying banners and chanting as the Ventura tied up.

The 3,078-passenger ship is currently sailing a Northern European itinerary that departed Southampton on August 23, with Rotterdam as one of its scheduled calls.

This is the second time in recent weeks Extinction Rebellion has targeted a cruise ship in the Netherlands. In late July, protesters attempted to prevent Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Eclipse from docking in Amsterdam. Similar demonstrations have also been staged against Royal Caribbean, Ambassador Cruise Line, and Regent Seven Seas vessels in Amsterdam, IJmuiden, and at the IJmuiden locks.
