Disney Adventure to Leave Shipyard and Head for the Baltic Sea

The largest ship ever built in Wismar, the Disney Adventure, will leave the shipyard late Sunday night and set course for the Baltic Sea. According to an order from the port authority released on Friday morning on the city’s website, the harbor basin will be closed to all other vessel traffic from Sunday 10:00 p.m. until Monday 9:00 a.m. to allow the massive vessel to maneuver out with the assistance of several tugboats.

The ship’s departure marks the end of a turbulent chapter in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s shipbuilding history. Construction of the ocean giant began in March 2018 and was hailed as the start of a promising new era, with expectations that cruise ship orders would secure the shipyards’ future for decades. However, the collapse of global cruising during the COVID-19 pandemic shattered those hopes. By 2022, MV Werften and its owner Genting Hong Kong had declared insolvency.

For a long time, the completion of the 342-meter-long, 46-meter-wide vessel was uncertain. Originally designed to carry 9,500 passengers and around 2,000 crew, the ship originally named as Global One and later Global Dream found a new future when Disney Cruise Line stepped in, and purchased the unfinished vessel and had it redesigned to fit the brand’s style and standards.

After sea trials and several stopovers, Disney Adventure is scheduled to enter service on December 15, 2025, offering voyages from Singapore across Southeast Asia.
