Crew Boat-Building Challenge Makes a Splash on Balmoral

Last week aboard Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral, creativity took center stage as crew members rolled up their sleeves for a playful but impressive challenge: building boats entirely out of recyclable materials.

The rules were simple but tough each boat had to be crafted using only repurposed items found onboard, and strong enough to carry six “guests” (represented by drink cans). But that wasn’t all. These handmade vessels then had to pass the ultimate test: staying afloat in the ship’s swimming pool while braving waves created by an eager cheering crowd.

Guests and crew gathered on the open deck to watch the action cheering on their favorite teams as makeshift ships bobbed, dipped in Balmoral’s own version of rough seas. The event not only sparked laughter and friendly competition but also showcased the crew’s creativity, teamwork, and dedication to sustainability.

“This kind of event really captures the spirit of life on board,” said one guest. “It’s fun, it brings everyone together, and it shows just how innovative the crew can be even with limited materials.”

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines extended a warm thank you to all crew members who participated, making the event a highlight of the voyage. From floating triumphs to sinking surprises, the recycled boat challenge was a reminder that with a little imagination and a lot of tape anything is possible at sea.
