Celebrity Infinity, struck one of the berths at the port of Ketchikan, Alaska, on Friday as the cruise ship was performing the docking maneuver. The incident happened on Friday at around 2:30 p.m. local time and according to the reports the ship tore off part of the platform and made a hole in its hull above the waterline. Luckily, the authorities on the dock noticed the approach was wrong and moved out of the way on time, but the ship still caused serious damage to the Berth Number 3. There are no injuries, but the damage is estimated between 2 and 3 million. The cause of the accident was strong gusts of wind reaching up to 100 mph at the time of the incident.
The docking maneuver in Ketchikan is tricky because there is little space. Three other cruise ships were at the time already on the remaining berths in Ketchikan: Seven Seas Mariner, Nieuw Amsterdam and Zaandam. The pier is no longer usable, and repairs would take one to two months.
Celebrity Cruises said the collision caused minor scraping damage to the ship’s hull, and nobody was hurt. The cruise ship returned to Vancouver on Sunday, and workers attended to the damage, while passengers praised the response from the crew. This Youtube video was uploaded showing the collision.
