TUI Cruises has announced that Finnish Captain Jan Gustaf Rautawaara will take command of the Mein Schiff Flow, the company’s second InTUItion-class ship currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. The LNG-powered vessel is set to enter service in summer 2026, with Captain Rautawaara leading the ship during its early voyages and likely serving as its inaugural captain.
Captain Rautawaara’s passion for the sea began on the Finnish coast, where he completed navigation school and earned his first maritime license. He went on to serve aboard a variety of international vessels before joining TUI Cruises, where he served as Staff Captain on the first Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2. His extensive background includes newbuild supervision, sea trials, and navigation in challenging waters.
After returning to TUI Cruises in 2024, Rautawaara took command of Mein Schiff 6, followed by the Mein Schiff Relax, the first vessel of the new InTUItion class. His appointment to Mein Schiff Flow marks another milestone in his long-standing relationship with the cruise line.
Continuing a Tradition of Trusted Captains
TUI Cruises has a tradition of assigning seasoned captains to oversee new ship launches. In 2024, Captain Omar Caruana commanded Mein Schiff 7, while Swiss Captain Thomas Roth led the commissioning and christening of Mein Schiff Relax before later joining the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Before them, Finnish Captain Kjell Holm played a key role in the company’s early years, introducing every new ship from 2009 to 2019.
Innovation on the Bridge
The bridge of Mein Schiff Flow will feature state-of-the-art navigation and control systems, replacing most traditional instruments with digital displays and touch panels. “It’s an honor to lead Mein Schiff Flow on her first journeys,” said Captain Rautawaara. “This new bridge combines cutting-edge technology with the timeless spirit of seafaring.”
Upcoming Deployment
After her launch in summer 2026, Mein Schiff Flow will sail itineraries in the Western Mediterranean, before repositioning to the Middle East for the winter 2026/27 season.
