After decades at sea, Captain Dag Dvergastein has retired, handing over command of MS Europa to his colleague, Captain Tom Petzold, in a heartfelt ceremony filled with music, memories, and gratitude.
On Thursday the show stage of MS Europa became the setting for a symbolic “handover of the keys.” The atmosphere was emotional as crew members, who had sailed under Dvergastein’s leadership, gathered to honor him with a choir performance. Their voices echoed the deep respect and affection felt for a captain who was more than just a navigator.
Captain Dvergastein’s final voyage, a 12-day Baltic Sea journey from Lübeck-Travemünde to Hamburg, marked the closing of a remarkable career. Over the years, he commanded ships of several fleets, including Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, and Holland America Line. Since April 2019, he has proudly worn the Hapag-Lloyd uniform.
Taking his place is Captain Tom Petzold, a seasoned mariner who has built his career with TUI Cruises since 2018. Petzold officially assumes command of MS Europa today, joining the rotation of captains who alternate several months at sea with time for rest and further training.
For the crew of MS Europa, it is the end of an era, but also the promise of a new beginning. As Captain Dvergastein bids his final farewell from the bridge, the seas remain constant ever changing, ever challenging, and ready to welcome a new hand at the helm.
