Princess Cruises has issued a reminder to its crew members about the company’s strict zero-tolerance policy on illegal substances, including marijuana in any form.
“Continuing our efforts at providing a safe and healthy environment for all teammates, we want to remind you of the company’s zero tolerance policy for the possession and use of any illegal substances, including marijuana in any form (e.g., vapes and edibles), which despite being legal for personal use in some U.S. states and countries we visit, remains illegal onboard our ships and therefore is strictly prohibited,” the letter reads.
Princess Cruises highlighted the need to respect the laws of the jurisdictions where it operates, as well as the flag states under which its vessels are registered. The letter explicitly states that synthetic drugs, designer substances, and medical marijuana are banned across all Carnival Corporation ships.
The cruise line stressed the importance of ensuring that all shipboard teammates remain free from drug influence.
“For obvious health and safety concerns, we must continue to be vigilant in ensuring our shipboard teammates remain free from the influence of illegal drugs. We also need to protect our company’s reputation and business, which can be seriously affected by any drug-related incident.”
As part of its enforcement measures, Princess Cruises has reintroduced fleetwide random drug testing. Crew members selected at random, or those suspected of drug use, are required to undergo mandatory testing. The company warned that any crew member caught in possession of illegal substances or testing positive for drug use will face disciplinary action, including termination and possible legal prosecution.
The letter also advised crew members against accepting edible goods such as candy from guests or colleagues, as these could unknowingly contain prohibited substances.
“In addition, it is important that teammates not accept candy and other edible goods from anyone, including guests, as there is no way to determine whether these items contain any drugs or other prohibited ingredients.”
Princess Cruises reaffirmed its commitment to a safe and drug-free environment, concluding the letter with:
“Creating a safe, secure, and healthy environment on board is everyone’s business, and we appreciate your support and attention to this important matter.”
