Global marine services provider Oceanic, through its SeaMed24 Medical Solutions, will offer support for seafarers by integrating VIKAND’s mental health training programs for maritime customers. This collaboration is part of Oceanic’s broader commitment to the overall wellbeing of crew members aboard the 2,300+ vessels it serves including merchant ships, cruise ships, and expedition vessels.
The two training modules developed by VIKAND are designed to improve officers' knowledge of mental health issues at sea, helping them recognize signs and symptoms of distress among colleagues and providing initial support to those in need. The programs also focus on understanding factors that contribute to suicide and self-harm, and how to approach and communicate with colleagues who may be at risk.
These modules are part of VIKAND’s OneHealth structured learning programs, which align with key industry guidelines, such as RightShip’s Inspection Ship Questionnaire (RISQ) 3.0.
“Incorporating VIKAND’s mental health modules into our services complements our approach to providing comprehensive support for seafarers, ensuring their wellbeing is prioritized in all aspects of life at sea,” said Kyriakos Hadjikyriakou, Managing Director of Oceanic.
He emphasized that Oceanic’s collaboration with VIKAND underscores the company’s dedication to crew welfare, recognizing the unique challenges that seafarers face while working at sea. "The team at VIKAND has shown they truly understand the mental stresses of onboard life, as many of them have experienced it firsthand. This was a key reason we chose to partner with them."
Ronald Spithout, Managing Director of OneHealth by VIKAND, highlighted the importance of prevention and early intervention: “Empowering officers with the skills and knowledge to recognize and respond to mental health crises is crucial. Our goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and address sensitive topics like suicide and self-harm, so we can prevent more incidents from occurring."
The broader mission of VIKAND and Oceanic is to enhance the long-term health and wellbeing of the maritime industry by promoting safety, resilience, and happiness among seafarers.
