After two years sitting in limbo in Greece, the last Pullmantur ship set sail on its final voyage this week. The Horizon is sailing to Aliaga ship-breaking yards in Turkey where the vessel will be beached and scrapped, reports Arxipelagos.
With the dismantling of the Horizon, the entire Pullmantur fleet ceases to exist. The exception is Zenith, who had left the company shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and currently sits idle in the Middle East.
The Sovereign and Monarch – which also made up the company’s fleet before the pandemic – were sold to scrap as soon as the company filed for bankruptcy in July 2020.
Operated by Pullmantur Cruises until 2020, the Horizon was moored in the Bay of Elefsis.
The vessel is en route to Aliaga, a Turkish scrap yard, where it will be scrapped in the coming days. During the operation, its construction materials, in addition to equipment, furniture, and systems, will be removed for reuse or recycling.
Built in 1990 for Celebrity Cruises, the 1354-passenger cruise ship Horizon was transferred to Pullmantur from Celebrity Cruises, together with MV Zenith. Over the years the vessel has undergone a few name changes - Island Star (1995), Pacific Dream (2009), and Horizon again in 2011. In October 2008, Royal Caribbean transferred the vessel to Pullmantur Cruises, starting operations in May 2009 under the name Pacific Dream.
