On September 5, 2024, the cruise ship AIDAprima operated by AIDA Cruises made history by refueling with 100% renewable biofuel (BMF100) at the Port of Rotterdam. This refueling marked the first time the ship has used a biofuel entirely from advanced waste and residue streams. VARO Energy, the provider of the biofuel, estimates that this innovative energy source will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85% when compared to conventional fossil fuels.
As part of this pilot project, the biofuel will be thoroughly tested to assess its performance in regular ship operations. AIDA Cruises is focusing on using biofuels to further advance the decarbonization of shipping.
"Since 2022, we have been gathering valuable experience with various biofuels," said Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises. He emphasized the importance of developing a reliable supply of globally available and marketable alternative fuels for significant sustainability gains in the shipping industry.
The AIDAprima, after being refueled in Rotterdam, will now use the biofuel in its regular voyages, including itineraries from Hamburg through the Norwegian fjords. These voyages will serve as real-world tests for the biofuel's performance.
VARO Energy: A Pioneer in Biofuel Innovation
VARO Energy, a leader in the provision of renewable biofuels for the shipping industry, began developing these alternative fuels in 2019. "We are pleased to supply AIDAprima with a high-quality biofuel and support our customers on their path to decarbonization," said Sacha Konan, Country President of VARO Energy. The company's work is vital to enabling the shipping industry to meet increasingly stringent environmental targets.
AIDA Cruises: Leading the Way in Alternative Fuel Adoption
AIDA Cruises has taken a proactive approach to sustainable shipping by embracing second-generation biofuels made from organic waste and residues. These biofuels not only drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions but can also be used without significant modifications to existing ship engines and fuel systems. The company’s broader strategy also includes using liquefied natural gas (LNG), shore power, and battery systems to minimize its environmental impact.
As part of Carnival Corporation & plc, AIDA Cruises has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions in its ship operations by 2050. This latest biofuel initiative represents a crucial step in the company’s long-term decarbonization goals.
